Nikon D5000: Review
Nikon D5000 review:

The Nikon D5000 digital SLR camera is a good all-round unit that makes some big improvements over previous models like the D60. Standing out as the flagship feature of the D5000 is its variable angle 2.7inch LCD screen that allows for flip out and adjustment for you to review your images. It is a camera that is aimed at the amateur photographer, but also has some features that make it a possible backup alternative for professionals.

Continuous shooting is available at speeds up to 4 frames per second, so you can be safe in the knowledge that you capture all you would require. You can record in 720p HD format, so movies are now a possibility in this digital SLR. The 2.7 inch, 230,000 pixels of resolution in the LCD works great with the Vari-angle color monitor.

Rating:  3.8 out of 5

Value

There is plenty of value in the D5000, with Nikon obviously paying attention to the way in which customers are purchasing in the digital SLR market. Some of the features of the D5000 are at times in line with those of the higher end models from Nikon such as the D90 and are ahead when compared with the D60. If you are shopping on a budget look at this unit as a little above the standard digital SLR offerings when weighing your investment.

Ergonomics

The camera feels relatively lightweight in the hand and is fairly well balanced. Especially if you are using longer focal length lenses, you would probably want to use a tripod as it weights in at 1lb 3.8oz. The pop-up flash design is well integrated into the camera so that it is less intrusive than some other designs. Added to the cameras usability is the four-way control pad that is adequately responsive.

Summary

The D5000 is a good performing camera that offers more than the regular entry level features you would expect from other manufacturers in the same price range. Overall the features and value included in the unit are worth a look. The Nikon D5000 is a significant step up from the D60; so if you are thinking of upgrading, check it out.
