Panasonic SC-BT100: Review
If you don't have a home theater system, or you are looking to upgrade your current system to one that has Blu-ray capabilities, then you may want to check out the Panasonic SC-BT100. The SC-BT100 is a 5.1 channel surround sound system that is upgradeable to 7.1 channel surround, and it provides a decent home theater experience without breaking the bank.

Although the SC-BT100 is not the first home theater in a box that comes equipped with a Blu-ray player, it is one of the first that offers the ability to upgrade to 7.1 channel surround sound if you so desire. The SC-BT100 utilizes two receivers, one based in the Blu-ray player itself, and the second assists in powering the wireless back speakers. Although some may dislike the added hardware that is required to power additional speakers in this setup, the second receiver is quite small in comparison to others on the market and measures only 6.5-" x 3.5-" x 6.5-" and weighs only 1.54 lbs. This setup is great for those who don't want to have to run cables in their room in order to experience 5.1 channel surround sound. All cables are nestled with the rest of the system, leaving your room just as ascetically pleasing as it was before the SC-BT100 was installed.

Rating:  3.4 out of 5

Features

The SC-BT100 comes complete with front and center speakers complete with bamboo diaphragms, which provides rigid sound accuracy. It also comes complete with a Kelton type subwoofer which is made up of an anchored internal driver with a passive radiation which reduces noise and delivers decent bass. For those who want a surround sound system that allows them to plug in their iPod, then the SC-BT100 delivers on those wants. With a flip down iPod dock on front of the player and operation via an onscreen interface with the use of the remote, the SC-BT100 allows users to play their MP3's over the SC-BT100's speakers. It also comes complete with a SD card slot that allows users to display their prized photos on their TV. The SC-BT100 also comes equipped with quality hardware that provides decent video and sound quality. For great video quality the built in UniPhier chip contains a wealth of picture processing technologies which bring out the best in Blu-ray disks and upscaled DVD's. This is supported by the PHL Chroma Processor which up-samples color from 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 for more true to life Blu-ray video quality.

Performance

The SC-BT100 provides 1000W of power at 250W a channel performance with video quality up to 1080p at 24fps. The built in receiver supports Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, DTS HD Master Audio, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic II X, while the included Blu-ray player can up-convert standard DVD's to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p which will be determined by the highest resolution your TV is able to support. Sound quality is good and the front and center speakers perform well with decent bass provided by the subwoofer, just be careful not to turn up the subwoofer too loud or it may overpower the other speakers Setup is quite simple, which is especially great for those who may not be technically savvy. Cables are color coded for easy setup, and they only install one way so you are sure to get everything setup right the first time.

Summary

In conclusion, the SC-BT100 provides a quality home theater setup all in one package. With the ability to upgrade to 7.1 channel surround, the SC-BT100 provides scalability without the worry of hardware compatibility. If you are looking for an all in one system with decent performance in a small package, then you may want to check out the SC-BT100. But if you value high end performance over size, then the SC-BT100 may not be the way to go.
