Pentax K20D: Review
Pentax K20D Review:

The Pentax K20D is the latest entry from Pentax into the mid-priced DSLR category. Based on the highly successful K10D body, the K20D features a new 14.6 megapixel sensor and live view capability (the ability to view the image on the LCD monitor during shooting). This is the first Pentax DSLR to feature a live view function. The K20D also features a body-based shake reduction system and an excellent dust removal system.

Additional features include a viewfinder with a 95% field of view and .95 magnification, extended dynamic range over the K10D, and dustproof, water-resistant construction. The camera features a 2.7 inch LCD monitor with 230,000 pixels and a 160 degree viewing angle. Continuous shooting is possible at up to 3 frames per second and the auto-focus system features 11 sensor points. Battery power is provided by a new high capacity rechargeable lithium ion battery pack that provides for up to 740 images per charge.

Rating:  4.4 out of 5

Value

The K20D represents an excellent value in a mid-priced DSLR. It incorporates many pro quality features at less than a professional price. The Pentax exclusive body-mounted shake reduction system means that lenses are less complicated and expensive. In addition, this system allows for any Pentax lens, including those from earlier film SLRs, to be used with the K20D. So if you own a Pentax film SLR, you could save a bundle on lenses alone. The 14.6 megapixel sensor and new live view function round out the pro features for this DSLR.

Performance

The K20D is strong in the performance department. The 14.6 megapixel sensor is the highest in this class of DSLRs and the excellent dust removal and shake reduction systems make for clear, sharp images. The live view function helps to compose difficult shots, and the 3 fps shooting mode provides excellent results for moving subjects. Battery power is among the best in class, and there are a host of shooting and scene modes to choose from. The controls are well laid out, including a top panel LCD data display. The viewfinder is exceptionally bright and provides an excellent field of view.

Summary

If you're a real enthusiast in the market for a mid-priced DSLR, the Pentax K20D is hard to beat. It is sure to be a strong competitor in its class. And if you happen to own a Pentax film SLR, the ability to use your existing lenses can save you a bundle. If not, lenses for this camera still cost less because of the body-mounted shake reduction system. The K20D is about as close as it gets to a pro DSLR at a mid-range price.
