Pioneer PDP-6020FD: Review

If you're in the market for a true large screen HDTV, the Pioneer PDP-6020FD is one of the largest on the market. As a member of Pioneer's KURO series, this huge plasma flat screen HDTV has a number of features that would make it an excellent choice as the foundation for your new home theater system. The unit features a 60 inch full HD (1920 x 1080p) resolution, 4 independent HDMI 1.3 inputs, and a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio.

It also comes with an improved Color Filter for enhanced contrast, a new Optimum Video mode which automatically adjusts audio and video settings according to details in the scene, and an integrated 18-watt stereo digital amplifier with fully detachable speaker. In addition, the unit features Home Media Gallery, which provides full multimedia (video, audio and image) support, an Internet connection and a USB 2.0 connection. There are also component, composite, S-video and PC connections.

Features

The PDP-6020FD comes with most of the features you'll need for it to be used as the centerpiece of a home theater system. Support for multimedia cards would have been nice, though. But that's about all there is to complain about, as the unit supports all of the HD formats currently in use, plus 3:2 and 3:3 pulldown for compatibility with your older content.

Performance

The PDP-6020FD delivers exceptional colors with vibrant contrast. The large screen is viewable under a wide variety of lighting conditions, thanks to the advanced plasma technology. And the full-featured sound system is actually usable if you don't intend on purchasing a separate multimedia receiver (the unit even features a subwoofer in the speaker system).

Summary

If you want a truly large screen HDTV, be sure and give the PDP-6020FD a good look at your local electronics store. Pioneer has done quite well in the TV business since the advent of flat screens, and this model doesn't disappoint. Brightness and contrast are as good as any unit on the market, and the available I/O options and ready to use built-in sound system make this an excellent choice for that new home theater system.
