The Sigma SD14 uses a 14 mega pixel Foveon X3 Direct Image CMOS sensor, which is different from most digital cameras on the market that use the Bayer-mask mosaic sensor. The Bayer-mask sensors can only detect red, green or blue colors at every pixel location. The Foveon sensor can detect all colors at each pixel location. The signals from several sensors then combine to form the color of a specific image. The image should have more accurate color and will be more dynamic. The Sigma SD14 has a maximum output resolution of 4608x3702. The zoom and optical focal length depend on the lens you use with the camera. The shutter speed is 30sec - 1/4000th + B. ISO ratings are 100, 200, 400 and 800. The LCD screen is 2.5 inches with 150k pixels. The viewfinder is optical reflex, with 98% frame coverage. The camera contains both, auto and manual focus.
FeaturesThis Sigma SD14 has a bright 2.5-inch LCD display screen that is easy to see. The viewfinder has a 98 percent frame coverage. The camera also includes a mechanical aperture preview button. There is an adequate backlit data display LCD panel on the top of the camera. This camera has a smooth, quiet shutter, with superior shutter speed range. The camera also has an anti-dust filter just behind the lens mount, sealing off the interior of the camera and keeping the dust out. This filter is easy to clean if any dust accumulates. ErgonomicsThis is a substantial camera. It feels big and heavy in your hand, especially in contrast to some of the lighter-weight digital SLR's on the market. It weighs 750g, including the battery. It is solidly made, constructed to sustain heavy use and to last. The body is made of metal and encased in a high-density plastic. The joints are all tight and the controls are sturdy and well made. The rubberized handgrip lets you get a good grip on the camera and the camera feels secure in your hand. While the body is rather box-like in shape, The external controls are limited, which leaves you with a lot of menu surfing. Overall, a solid camera built for two-hand use. SummaryThe Sigma SD14 is a unique, well-constructed camera. It is easy to handle, manipulate and maneuver. The camera performs very well, producing images with excellent quality detail and sharpness. The strength of the camera is the ability to reproduce color and the dynamic range it has to do that. The images created have a quality that rivals film. While this camera might be a bit clunky and somewhat particular, the overall verdict is that it takes great pictures. It's not for everyone, but for those who know this camera will give them what they want, it's the camera for them. Pros
