Sony BDP-S550: Review
The Sony BDPS550 is Sony's top-of-the-line consumer model Blu Ray Disc Player. It is fully compatible with all of your existing DVDs. It features 1080p output for a true HD experience and 1080p upscaling, which converts your existing DVDs to 1080p. The unit also features Sony's exclusive BD Live technology, which features an Ethernet port and allows you to download and stream content from the web such as additional scenes, trailers and movie-based games.

The unit also features 7.1 channel analog audio outputs for compatibility with your existing receivers and HDMI, component video and composite video outputs. Additional outputs include RF digital, Component video, and S-Video. The BDP-S550 also features Dolby TrueHD internal decoding, 24p true cinema and Bravia SYNC for Theater, which provides you with 1-button control over compatible Bravia HDTV and HDMI a/v components.

Rating:  4.6 out of 5

Features

This Blu Ray player is packed with useful features. In addition to the features already mentioned, it features BD/DVD/CD and AVCHD compatibility, a Precision Drive system which is capable of playing back some of your damaged or warped discs, and the xross Media Bar on-screen display for convenient access to menus. The number of output connections provides compatibility with your existing equipment, and the Ethernet port makes connection to the web a snap.

Performance

The BDP-S550 provides incredible performance. The unit uses Precision Cinema circuitry to process still images separately from those in motion, providing sharper backgrounds when the main subject is in motion. The 1080p output can produce over 2 MP per frame, which is 6 times the resolution of DVD. The HD sound output is amazing, and the BD Live service adds value to the discs you purchase or rent. And backwards compatibility with all of your existing media is a feature not to be overlooked when buying a new technology.

Summary

The BDP-S550 is one of the best non-professional Blu Ray disc players on the market. Both audio and video outputs are high quality, and the number of output connections is unequaled in this class. When coupled with a good HDTV and surround system, you can enjoy better than theater quality audio and video in your home. If you're in the market for a Blu Ray disc player, give the BDP-S550 a look.
