Sony VAIO NW Series VGNNW380F/T: Review

The overwhelming number of laptops on the market can leave consumers baffled at which one to choose, but if you're looking for a great multimedia notebook, then consider the Sony VAIO NW Series Notebook PC VGNNW380F/T. This 15.5" computer packs entertainment-friendly features like ATI graphics and Blu-Ray reader into a sturdy VAIO platform. Although this isn't the lightest and most compact notebook, if you're looking for something to use at home, then this is a great laptop to consider.

Measuring 14.6" x 1.2" x 9.8" and weighing approximately 6 lbs, this VAIO NW Series notebook fits well into the mainstream category of laptops, specifically targeting users who frequently enjoy high-definition movies and light gaming. Equipped with 4GB RAM, a 500GB hard drive, and ATI Graphics (512MB VRAM), this notebook is the perfect companion for multi-taskers and home entertainment users. Although the standard capacity battery limits users to approximately 4 hours operating time, there is an available extra-capacity battery that offers up to 7 hours computing time. This notebook has a few flaws, but overall it is an excellent value and great notebook for consumers who frequently use multimedia.

Rating:  3.8 out of 5

Features

Among the features previously mentioned, there are also several other capabilities featured in this notebook. One of those is the Built-in MOTION EYE camera and microphone, which unlike the majority of webcams, actually includes unique face-tracking technology. Even better are the speedy networking features, which range from gigabit Ethernet to wireless 802.11b/g/n. If you frequently enjoy Blu-Ray movies, then this is definitely the notebook for you. Thanks to the HDMI port, Blu-Ray reader, and DVD-RW/CD-RW drive, now you can enjoy multimedia of a variety of formats. There is also the handy multimedia memory card reader to access all of your memories.

Performance

Although this Sony VAIO NW Series notebook lacks a powerhouse Core i3 or Core i5 processor, the 2.20GHz Core 2 Duo processor is still sufficient enough to assist users in performing everyday tasks, such as editing video, watching movies, word processing, and light gaming. More specifically, graphic performance is better than integrated-graphic competitors, in that the ATI HD4570 graphics card with 512MB memory processes textures much faster and more efficiently. Overall performance in competing notebooks of the same price range seems slightly higher, but when factoring in the other features of this model, it is still a good laptop.

Summary

In an ever-evolving notebook market, consumers have a difficult time choosing the right laptop because there are newer models arriving almost daily. If you specifically have movie watching, occasional video editing, and light gaming in mind (along with other various tasks), then the Sony VAIO NW Series VGNNW380F/T notebook is probably a good choice for you. Although it lacks Bluetooth and extra-long battery life, if you can put aside the minor quirks then this is a great choice overall. Keep in mind though, that for the price you can find similar competing notebooks with more power.
