Sony VAIO X Series VPCX115KX/B: Review

Consumers in need of an ultra-thin, ultra-light, multifunctional laptop should definitely consider the Sony VAIO Signature Collection X Series VPCX115KX/B notebook. This one-of-a-kind PC packs most of the capabilities of bulkier notebooks into a user-friendly, travel-manageable platform. Although this notebook is a little high on the price tag, if you need extra functionality in an ultraportable, then this is definitely the model to consider. Overall, it is a great value and perhaps one of the better Sony laptops in its class.

At just 10.95" x 0.55" x 7.29" in dimensions and a mere 1.6 pounds, this VAIO X Series notebook is one of the most travel-friendly laptops available today. Not only does it include many of the useful networking functions, but it also packs sufficient processing power into a compact, sturdy, and versatile carbon-fiber chassis. Designed with durability and reliability in mind, this notebook impresses consumers in virtually every category. Needless to say, the high price tag is daunting to some consumers, but well worth it to others.

Rating:  4.2 out of 5

Features

In order to eliminate bulkiness and minimize size, Sony downsized several features and eliminated others all together. For instance, don't plan to do any heavy processing, because this model comes barebones with an Intel Atom Processor Z550 (2GHz). While this processor, aided with 2GB RAM, certainly performs multiple small tasks very efficiently, it is only for the most basic applications. For hard disk storage, there is a 128GB solid-state drive. For networking, there is Bluetooth, fast Ethernet, wireless 802.11b/g/n, and even Verizon Mobile Broadband. An added bonus is the built-in GPS system, which is another plus for frequent travelers. Other features include a multimedia memory card slot, large capacity battery (in addition to standard battery), built-in webcam, and pre-installed software trials. Overall, the features are great, but if you need more power and functionality, you will have to sacrifice ergonomics with another model.

Ergonomics

If you need a notebook for home or school, then perhaps this is not the best model for the price. On the other hand, if you tend to travel frequently and emphasize your decision on portability, then the VAIO X Series should definitely be considered. The 11.1" LED-backlit LCD is compact, yet vivid enough to meet your viewing needs. The ½ inch-thick lightweight chassis is perfect for those with limited space or carrying capacity. While this notebook may lack the more lucrative features of similar models, it is certainly one of the most ergonomic Sony VAIO laptops.

Summary

If budget is no question and you absolutely need one of the thinnest, lightest, and most valued notebooks from Sony, then consider the Sony VAIO Signature Collection X Series VPCX115KX/B laptop. Not only is it ergonomic-friendly and very handy, but it is also nicely featured with a balance of networking and multitasking utilities. Some consumers will frown at the price and lack of room for upgrades, but overall you must take into perspective that Sony has crammed in as many features as the notebook's size will allow.

  • Traveler-friendly- lightweight and perfect for anybody on-the-go
  • Great value-includes numerous features plus large capacity battery
  • Ultimate connectivity- wireless 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth, and Ethernet
