Sony KDL-60NX800 review : 60 inch BRAVIA NX800 Series 1080p HDTV
If you want a monster LCD television, and budget is not an issue, then by all means take a look at the 60" Sony BRAVIA NX800 Series HDTV (Sony KDL-60NX800). This model features the most advanced image processing technology from Sony available today, as well as the latest power-saving enhancements and capabilities. Now with built-in WiFi, you can get the latest updates from your favorite widgets, as well as other exclusive multimedia content. Although the picture will not impress the most picky consumers, for most people this model is probably one of the best large-screen LCDs available.

Measuring approximately 56.8" x 36.4" x 15" (56.8" x 35" x 2.6" without pedestal) and weighing 111.5 lbs (95.4 lbs without pedestal), this Sony BRAVIA HDTV is one of the largest LCD TVs that Sony has released for the consumer market. Loaded with the latest high-definition audio, video, networking, and multimedia-enhancing technologies, this model is certainly one of the most powerful and most full-featured LCDs currently available. The price will deter many consumers, but if you don't mind paying several thousand dollars for a mammoth LCD television, then this may be the one for you.

Rating:  4.4 out of 5

Quality

The tricky part of manufacturing a HDTV with such a large display is ensuring that the quality and performance of the picture remains essentially equal, and Sony has definitely done a good job at doing just that. This LCD maintains its ultra-thin profile by featuring an Edge LED backlight system, which places the backlight around the edges of the display (rather than the rear). Thanks to advances in the BRAVIA Engine 3 and LED technology, this model boasts an impressive "infinite" dynamic contrast ratio. To some users, the backlight causes the blacks to look blue, but this may be a result of reflections of natural light upon the Edge LED backlight and large screen.

Features

Aside from the stunning picture quality, this LCD HDTV also packs impressive features. The most immediately-noticeable enhancement is the 240Hz Motionflow performance system, which ensures that images are crisps and smooth. In addition to the new BRAVIA Engine 3, there are other technologies such as DLNA for ultimate cross-platform compatibility, plus integrated Wi-Fi to connect your multimedia networking devices. For your connectivity needs, there is a USB port, four HDMI ports, one Ethernet port, PC plug, RF connector, optical digital output, one component port, two composite ports, three analog audio inputs, and one audio output port.

Summary

If budget is not an issue, then perhaps the 60" Sony BRAVIA NX800 Series HDTV is for you. Sony has yet to release a large screen 3D-enabled LCD HDTV, so competitors like Samsung have the leg-up for features such as 3D capability. Needless to say, this is one of the largest high-quality, slim-profile televisions that Sony has ever released, so if you're ready to jump onto the bandwagon of monolithic LCD HDTVs, then consider this model.

Pros

  • Monolithic- huge, slim-profile LCD HDTV with LED backlight
  • Spectacular- breathtaking picture thanks to new BRAVIA Engine
  • Unique-features tons of ports, built-in WiFi, and exclusive Internet widgets
  • Seamless- immaculate performance thanks to 240Hz Motionflow system

Cons

  • Expensive- cost several thousands of dollars
