TomTom GO 740 LIVE review

TomTom GO 740 LIVE review
TomTom GO 740 LIVE review:

If you are not quite ready for the latest installment of GPS devices, then perhaps you should try a time-tested model such as the TomTom GO 740 LIVE. Though limited in its interface, this GPS offers advanced features such as Bluetooth hands-free calling, optional LIVE services (3 months free), voice recognition, and enhanced positioning on premium maps. Be prepared for short battery life, however, unless you plan on keeping navigation strictly inside your car.

Measuring 3.4 x 5.0 x 0.9 inches and weighing nearly 8 ounces, the GO 740 primarily offers interactive "live" connected services, but also gives consumers a reliable navigation system for traveling beyond the normal boundaries. Its exclusive Plug & Go capability means that you do not have to spend hours trying to figure out how to operate the device. Needless to say, the interface is not as user-friendly as some would like. Overall, the TomTom GO 740 is still a good GPS.

Rating:  4.4 out of 5

Value

Aside from the bundle of features, traffic updates, and re-routing capabilities, the TomTom GO 740 seems almost perfect for the travel-ready consumer. Unfortunately, it slips short with a battery life of only 3 hours and an interface that is not as intuitive as many would hope. Needless to say, it is still a good value because few LIVE-enabled GPS devices manage to offer users both the features they want and the reliability in navigation performance they need.

Features

Unlike traditional GPS devices, the GO 740's "live" services offers basic Internet functionality, including connecting with buddies who also have a GO 740 and sharing instant messages. You can get the latest fuel prices, search locally using Google, and even check the weather forecast. Other features include IQ Routes Technology, spoken street names, voice-activated navigation, the aforementioned Bluetooth hands-free calling, advanced lane guidance, and more. Overall, the features are nearly complete with today's standards of high-end GPS devices.

Summary

In the ever-evolving world of GPS devices, the TomTom GO 740 makes its presence loud and clear, boasting all the LIVE features such as Google Local Search, Weather, Fuel Prices, and more. In addition, it further expands its capabilities with Bluetooth, voice-activated navigation, and advanced lane guidance. While initially the price tag may have been too much above par, over a year after the release it has come down to a reasonable level. Needless to say, this GPS is not without its faults, so you may want to consider one of the newer models.

Pros

  • Ready- LIVE services work straight out of the box
  • Flexible- offers Bluetooth, 2GB internal memory, voice navigation
  • Featured- connect with Buddies, find fuel prices, traffic updates
  • Rare- now discontinued but for sale at discounted price

Cons

  • Weak- battery lasts only 3 hours, user interface needs improvement
