Toshiba NB100 NB100-014 Netbook: Review
Review: Toshiba NB100 NB100-014

If you are in the market for a go anywhere notebook produced by one of the manufacturers at the forefront of laptop technology, then you may want to check out the Toshiba NB100 NB100-014. The NB100-014 like any other netbook, offers the user the ability to surf the web, use email, utilize your favorite word processor or enjoy a wide array of multimedia, all in a handy little package.

Weighing in at 2.31 lbs, the NB100-014 comes complete with an Intel Atom 1.6 GHz Processor, 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive and an Intel GMA 950 graphics card. The NB100-014 also comes complete with a 4 cell battery, Bluetooth V2.1 + EDR and 802.11bg Wireless LAN capabilities.

Rating:  3.8 out of 5

Features

The NB100-014 features an 8.9 inch Wide SVGA TFT screen with a 1024 x 600 resolution which is the perfect size for surfing the web, reading email, or watching a quick movie. The NB100-014 only comes with Windows XP home edition. While some may be missing the Ubuntu Linux that is offered on other netbooks, Toshiba sticks to what it knows best and provides its laptop quality in a smaller package.

It comes complete with 3 USB ports, a headphone jack, microphone jack, 5 in 1 media adapter, VGA out, and an Ethernet jack. Toshiba delivers performance as well as functionality with these ports. It is quite evident that time was actually taken to create a user friendly layout to each port. The headphone and microphone have a place of importance, sitting right on the front of the netbook, readily accessible for watching movies or listening to music without worrying of disturbing your neighbor. Ethernet and AC power ports are tucked nicely together, allowing the user to not be tied to a desk without wires sticking out from multiple sides of the machine at once.

The netbook also comes complete with some pre-installed software. It includes Toshiba ConfigFree, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Nortel Internet Security Trial and MS Office 2007 trial. Pre-installed software is a nice touch, especially since the netbook does not have an optical drive, and the user would have no way of installing new software.

Performance

The NB100-014 performs quite well for a netbook. Battery life under normal usage conditions, with 100% screen brightness and web-surfing or movie watching, it will last just under 4 hours, which is decent for a netbook.

One of the best performance features of the NB100-014 is that Toshiba has chosen to provide users with the standard keyboard you would expect to find on larger models. Unlike its competitors, no key rows were removed, so there is no need for the user to learn unusual finger gymnastics just to be able to type your average document.

Summary

In conclusion, the NB100-014 provides great functionality with some performance features of its larger siblings, but into an easier to carry package. If you are looking for the functionality of a netbook, with some added features that are normally only found on the larger machines then the NB100-014 may be just what you are looking for.
