Toshiba Satellite U505-S2930: Review
Toshiba Satellite U505-S2930: Review

Toshiba have risen to prominence in the laptop stakes over the past few years and are now producing some real quality systems. The Toshiba Satellite U505-S2930 is a thin and lightweight widescreen laptop with a 13.3inch viewable display area. Its design differs a little from standard setups that you may be used too with the keyboard that has been included being somewhat difficult to get used too.

Despite the small gaff with the keyboard you should be happy with the Satellite U505-S2930. It comes standard with 4GB of DDR2 memory as well as a 5400RPM, 320GB hard drive. The 13.3 inch widescreen display isn't necessarily the best for gaming so don't expect miracles, especially given the Intel 4500M integrated graphics card. Maximum display resolution is 1280x800 and with the 4800mAh, 6-Cell Li-ion battery it should be 1.5 to 2 hours of operation before a recharge should be needed.

Rating:  3.2 out of 5

Quality

Toshiba have chosen to include the Intel Core2 Duo in this system by default, shying away from the lower end Celeron processors that other manufacturers have chosen to include in many of their laptop systems. Whilst the performance differences are sometimes negligible, the quality construction the Core2 Duo CPU helps the U505-S2930 stand out as a more attractive 13inch notebook that will continue to perform for you over time. Add this in with the reliability of the Intel brand and the 1 year Toshiba warranty and there is a good quality you can rely upon.

Features

Toshiba have included a DVD-Supermulti drive for disc burning, with the added feature of this disc burner is the Labelflash technology that supports up to 11 formats, so you should be able to produce some quality disc prints with little trouble. The Intel Core2 duo T6500 processor helps the U505 stand out from the other comparable systems, as does the 802.11n Wi-Fi card that is included. The unit is probably let down by the exclusion of Bluetooth capability as standard, though you can add it into the system for an extra cost when you purchase.

Summary

Plenty of storage space and the inclusion of the 802.11n means the Toshiba Satellite U505-S2930 is future proof enough to last you a few years. The 13.3inch widescreen doesn't give you the largest viewing experience around, so providing you are using this system as a supplement while you travel you should be right to go. If you want more performance, look for a larger system.

Pros

  • Intel Core2 Duo Processor
  • 802.11n Wi-Fi
  • Trusted laptop manufacturer
  • Lightweight & Thin

Cons

  • Lacks Bluetooth
