The speaker is the last, but critical part of your audio system. Loudspeakers change the electrical signal from your audio component into (mechanical) sound waves and your ears do the rest. While the design of a speaker varies, most use a diaphragm or cone driver inside a basket. The resulting magnetic field caused by the electrical signal makes the voice coil and cone move back and forth to create sound waves. Most loudspeakers have full range drivers and a combination of tweeters, mid-range, woofer and sub-woofers. Types of drivers also include horn, piezoelectric, ribbon, electrostatic magnetostrictive, digital, plasma arc, distributed mode, flat panel, and bending wave. The crossover also provides the gatekeeper role in order to properly direct the frequency ranges to each speaker. Most manufacturers provide multiple types of speakers including bookshelf, floorstanding, center, rear channel, and sub-woofers.
